Meet Horst Neumann

Together with some creative friends, Horst Neumann established the Friendship Force of Varel, Germany club, in 1991. Since then, he has served as President, Exchange Director for many in- and outbound exchanges. Now, as FF Varel’s Honorary President he is in charge of the club’s Youth Program. Their website is: www.friendshipforce-varel.org. In 2007 he initiated “Team Germany”, a group of experienced and enthusiastic FF leaders offering their support to German Clubs.
Horst was born in a region of Germany which is part of Poland now. Fortunately his family was able to escape in April 1945 just before the Russian tanks entered his village near the city of Stettin.
Horst grew up in Western Germany. He always enjoyed studying and attended the Gymnasium school (highest level school type) where he was granted a scholarship to the University of Oldenburg. At the age of twenty-two he began his teaching career, as one of the youngest teachers in the region.
After a few years of teaching, he resumed his studies at the University in Hanover, graduating with a degree in Special Education. Throughout his career, Horst took on numerous responsibilities and was repeatedly elected as speaker of the Teachers Union for a period of 12 years.
During his distinguished career, Horst developed motivating and attractive curriculum’s, cooperating with the regional school administration to raise the chances for disabled students to qualify for future jobs.
After 38 years of teaching, Horst retired in 2000.
His favourite hobby is soccer, a passion he has enjoyed for 30 years, and still plays! With a degree from the German Soccer Association (DFB) he has been able to coach several adult soccer teams.
Some of Horst's other interests are politics, economics, international student relations and Sea - Shanty singing.
Horst and his wife Ingrid celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in 2008. Their five grandchildren, travelling, swimming and gymnastics keep Horst and Ingrid ‘on the run’-physically and mentally.
